Background
CITA-CITA KITA YANG MULIA (Our Noble Aspirations) is a group exhibition reflecting on shared dreams, identity, and cultural belonging in contemporary Singapore. Developed within the context of Singapore’s post-1965 nation-building narrative, the exhibition explores how multicultural values, resilience, and collective aspiration continue to shape personal and communal identities today.
By foregrounding traditional ethnic attire within contemporary visual contexts, the exhibition positions heritage not as a static symbol but as a living and evolving cultural expression.
Description
The exhibition brings together photography, videography, and textile-based works to construct a layered visual narrative that intertwines heritage with modern life. Through staged imagery, moving images, and material textures, the artworks explore how cultural memory is worn, carried, and reinterpreted across generations.
Rather than presenting identity as fixed or singular, CITA-CITA KITA YANG MULIA frames it as relational and aspirational—shaped by personal histories, shared values, and collective imagination. Each work functions both as a reflection on who we are and as a proposition for who we might become.
