Background
Illustrating Kindness II builds upon the inaugural edition of the Shantang Arts & Culture Exhibition, continuing an inquiry into the cultural values embedded within Shantang (善堂) institutions. The project approaches kindness, filial piety, and collective care not as abstract moral concepts, but as lived social practices rooted in community history. By foregrounding youth perspectives, the exhibition seeks to recontextualise traditional values within contemporary cultural and artistic frameworks.
Description
The exhibition integrates historical research, youth-led artistic creation, and public participation. It brings together archival materials from Shantang institutions, contemporary artworks by students, site-specific installations, and interactive cultural workshops. Through visual art, multimedia, and participatory formats, the project creates an intergenerational platform where heritage knowledge is translated into creative expression, allowing cultural values to be reinterpreted and activated within present-day society.
