Background

Unanswered was initiated during the COVID-19 period, when many young people returned to their hometowns due to disrupted education, work, and mobility. This sudden pause created a shared condition of uncertainty—questions without answers, plans without direction, and futures temporarily suspended.

Rather than attempting to resolve this uncertainty, the project embraced it as a collective state worth acknowledging. Unanswered frames confusion not as failure, but as an honest moment of reflection within a generation navigating interrupted trajectories.

Description

Conceived as a small-scale community exhibition, Unanswered invited young artists and creators to respond intuitively to their present condition. Works spanned painting, installation, writing, sound, and everyday objects, prioritising sincerity, immediacy, and openness over formal resolution.

The exhibition space functioned as a shared site for encounter rather than a conventional display. Audiences were encouraged to linger, converse, and reflect on their own unresolved questions. In this sense, the project blurred the boundary between exhibition and gathering—allowing art to serve as a medium for mutual recognition rather than definitive statements.

Unanswered became the first collective action of what later evolved into Escape Art Club, revealing a latent need for shared cultural space and dialogue during a time of social fragmentation.

Outcomes

  • First self-organised exhibition initiated by the founding members of Escape Art Club
  • Engaged local youth through low-threshold participation and informal dialogue
  • Activated a temporary cultural space during a period of social disruption
  • Laid the conceptual and organisational foundation for future community-based projects
  • Contributed to the formation of a long-term grassroots cultural collective

Significance

  • Articulated a generational emotional condition without forcing resolution
  • Demonstrated art’s capacity to hold ambiguity and uncertainty
  • Functioned as the conceptual origin point of Escape Art Club
  • Informed later practices centred on community, participation, and public discourse
